A sizeable portion of the logistics provider’s services are dedicated to the pharmaceutical and medical device sector. This is particularly the case in Alsace, where Rhenus provides logistics for a number of companies with industrial sites around Strasbourg. The need for storage and logistics services is growing rapidly for these products, in order to support the increase in demand generated by the pandemic and an ageing population. As such, in the spring of 2020 the management of Rhenus Logistics France decided to build a new temperature-controlled warehouse at the Port of Strasbourg, where the company has a plot of land.
“While we already have over 50,000 square metres of temperature-controlled storage space in the Strasbourg port area, we have decided to continue investing in this region to meet rapidly increasing demand in the pharmaceutical sector. Before our latest 12,500 square metre warehouse – which opened in June 2020 – was even operational, we had already decided to add another 8,500 square metres at a nearby site”, said Laurent Schuster, Managing Director of Rhenus Logistics France.
Construction has just begun. The warehouse will have a number of cells with temperatures ranging from -20 to +25 degrees Celsius. Other projects are also being considered at the Strasbourg Eurometropole.
As part of the plan for this new site, in June 2021 the Rhenus heavy vehicle and trailer maintenance workshop was moved to a new site in the southern zone of the Port of Strasbourg. The truck wash was also relocated nearby, and is now back in operation.
