As global climate regulations like the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) reshape the transport and logistics sector, Indonesian businesses are under pressure to enhance their carbon management strategies to maintain competitiveness. Indonesia has been proactively developing carbon pricing mechanisms, as it looks to fulfill its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) and achieve its Net Zero Emission (NZE) targets by 2060. It is also actively developing a national roadmap for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), since mid-2024, to position itself as a significant player in the sustainable fuel market and leverage on its abundant natural resources and strategic location.

Over a closed-door event with business partners on 22 April 2025, Rhenus Indonesia shared a series of initiatives to help support businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), by providing resources and expertise to help them in areas such as ESG reporting.

Highlights are:

  • Sustainable Reporting: Includes the Emission dashboard (which allow businesses to track their CO2 emissions, monitor their shipments and reduce their carbon footprint), its partner EcotransIT’s services (calculates freight emissions, tracks and optimises freight energy use). Both services are available for air and ocean freight to calculate the emissions from any mode of transport.
  • Sustainable Aviation initiatives: Rhegreen (ensures the most CO2-efficient aircraft is selected), Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) insetting (available through Rhenus’ “Book and claim” service), and collaborations like Clean Cargo where Rhenus and industry partners work together to reduce emissions and align their efforts with global sustainability efforts.
  • Sustainable shipping initiatives: Includes Transport Mode Optimizer (helps to prioritize sustainability when choosing transportation modes and routing), and Intermodal transportation.
  • Sustainable overland transport initiatives: Includes the long-term investment plan on Alternative Drive Vehicles (reducing the carbon footprint of transport operations with the use of e-trucks, CNG, LNG, and biodiesel vehicles), Smart Technologies (such as the ITC Pro Fill level sensor to optimize routes)
  • Sustainable facilities: Innovative projects and eco-friendly infrastructure across multiple locations, including facilities that incorporate design and technologies that minimize environmental impact and reduce energy consumption, photovoltaic systems, and rainwater utilization systems.

With a strong track record in sustainable logistics, Rhenus sites are certified according to various globally-recognized standards related to sustainability. These include:

  • Over 600 sites certified according to ISO 9001 – quality management systems;
  • Over 250 sites certified according to ISO 50001 – energy management systems
  • Over 230 sites certified according to ISO 14001 – environmental management systems
  • Over 150 sites certified according to ISO 45001 – occupational health & safety management systems
  • GHG emissions certified according to ISO 14064.

“At Rhenus, we believe a strategy for sustainability should not be an afterthought. It should be a core principle that guides how we build supply chains, move goods, and collaborate across industries. From making emission reporting more transparent, investing in cleaner transportation solutions to supporting digital transformation, we are committed to driving meaningful change,” said Fabian Kieble, Managing Director of Rhenus Indonesia.

"Sustainability in logistics means optimized routes, cleaner fuel, and efficiency in operations. It is not only eco-friendly, but also economically sound and this is what we are striving for as we provide the best sustainable solutions for our customers in Rhenus," added Nitipon Tansakul, Regional Head of Sustainability for Asia Pacific, Rhenus Air & Ocean.

Companies can look forward to partnering Rhenus Indonesia in sustainable logistics. The logistics provider, established 10 years ago in Indonesia, offers a full suite of logistics services for industries including automotives, life sciences and healthcare, technology, industrial and consumer sectors across its six local offices across the islands including Java, Sumatra and Batam.
