    Because ports are often not located directly at the production site or the destination of the goods, pre-carriage and on-carriage transport enables the transport of goods to and from locations which are not directly connected to a port.

    The terms pre-carriage, main carriage, and on-carriage describe the distinct stages of the transport chain. Pre-carriage refers to the initial phase, where goods are transported from their point of origin to the nearest transshipment hub. Main carriage represents the central and longest segment of the journey, covering most of the distance. Finally, on-carriage describes the concluding phase, in which goods are moved from the last transshipment point to their final destination.
