What are the consequences of the changes to the truck toll for Rhenus customers?

The economic situation in Germany poses a number of challenges for the freight forwarding industry. In addition to the economic developments, accompanied by lower shipment volumes and rising overall costs that affect all sectors, the increase in the CO2 toll has been in force since December 1, 2023. This short-term cost increase will hit the transport industry hard and we as a company cannot absorb it without making adjustments. We have already informed our customers by letter about the specific consequences of the toll changes. If you have any further questions on this topic, please get in touch with your contact at Rhenus.

What are the chances and when will they come into force?

The expansion of the toll to include a CO2 component has been in force since December 1, 2023. This affects vehicles from 7.5 tons. Since July 1, 2024, the CO2 component will also be extended to trucks with more than 3.5 tons and up to 7.5 tons.

What are the objectives of the law?

The measures are intended to help achieve the climate protection target and make the use of trucks with alternative drive systems more attractive. By 2030, one third of the mileage should be electric. The German government is thus implementing the requirements of the Eurovignette Directive, according to which the costs of air and noise pollution may be charged to truck traffic and the toll rates are differentiated according to the CO2 emissions of the vehicles. The government has set 200 euros per tonne of CO2 emissions - EU regulations stipulate at least 90 euros per tonne, so the federal government has set a significantly higher amount.

How much additional revenue is expected?

In the years 2024 to 2027, the CO2 component in the toll for vehicles weighing 7.5 tons or more is expected to generate additional revenue of 26.61 billion euros. The revenue is to be used to improve the transport infrastructure for federal trunk roads and for measures in the rail network.
