A special project for offshore wind farms: Rhenus transports AW169 helicopter from Germany to Taiwan

The Rhenus Group recently demonstrated its expertise in the aerospace sector once again with a smooth helicopter transport operation for HeliService, a leading provider of offshore personnel transportation services. The project involved the transportation of an eight-seater AW169 helicopter from Germany to Taiwan, involving various Rhenus units working together on a global level.

The order to deliver the first helicopter of its kind was awarded to Rhenus in December 2023 and began with the project transportation of the helicopter by Rhenus Project Logistics Germany from Emden on the German North Sea coast to the port in Taiwan. Once the ro/ro vessel had arrived at the sea terminal in Taiwan, the teams of Rhenus Air & Ocean Taiwan and Rhenus Offshore Logistics took over. Drawing on their expertise in local logistics requirements, they initially supervised the unloading and customs clearance process. For the handling and subsequent transport, they transferred the helicopter from the ship to a low-loader truck using a 20-tonne crane. It was then temporarily stored in a customs warehouse and finally moved to the terminal at Taichung Airport by truck.

The challenges included not only the great distance and complex requirements of a helicopter as cargo, but also delays, route adjustments and compliance with the precise regulations during the course of the project. It was therefore necessary to utilise local expertise and quick adaptation to last-minute changes to ensure safe and punctual delivery.

Björn Wittek, Managing Director of Rhenus Offshore Logistics, attributes the successful transportation to the good coordination and quick reaction times of those involved in the project: “We believe in being prepared for all scenarios. So, when faced with vessel delays and last-minute changes, our team responded swiftly, replanning and coordinating efficiently with all involved parties. Our flexible and proactive approach was pivotal to the success of this project.”

This ensured that the helicopter could be delivered in perfect condition and can soon be put into service for personnel transfer in Taiwanese offshore wind farms.
