Rhenus opens new Green Steel Logistics Hub

The Rhenus Group's pioneering, sustainable steel handling hub was officially opened at the Port of Dortmund. Rhenus representatives cut the symbolic opening ribbon at a ceremony together with Oliver Krischer, the Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The new hub is intended to promote green steel distribution in the region. In future, steel will be delivered from the major seaports to the Port of Dortmund by low-emission inland waterway vessels and then transported to customers using environmentally friendly means of transport, such as electric trucks or trains. The electric trucks are supplied with power generated by a photovoltaic system on the approximately 7,200 square meter hall roof. The crane systems in the hall are also supplied with the generated electricity. “PV-powered warehouses, diesel-free onward transportation using electric trucks and low-emission transport via the European waterways: we are converting the entire supply chain to be sustainable,” explains Michael Petersmann, Managing Director of Rhenus Port Logistics Rhein-Ruhr.

With this sustainable concept, Rhenus Port Logistics offers its customers the opportunity to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in the supply chain. This infrastructure perspective enables steel producers to further advance their efforts to produce steel more sustainably in this way. Another major advantage is that Rhenus offers the entire logistics chain from a single source.
