Podcast-Episode 28: 3PL, 4PL, 5PL – Logistics Control Tower Solutions

Warehousing, supply chain management, stock demand, distribution logistics, returns management… both small businesses and huge producers of goods face the same challenges when it comes to organising and managing their logistics. Third-party (3PL) and fourth-party logistics (4PL) is designed to help customers by managing these services on behalf of companies, which becomes increasingly important and complex with the increasing degree of digitalisation.

In the newest episode of Logistics People Talk, experts Simon Bodmer, Head of Logistics at REMONDIS Recycling, and Chris Gerfertz, Managing Director of Rhenus 4PL Solutions, explore case-based 4PL solutions and how customers can benefit from the transparency and the third- or fourth-party management of supply chain logistics. While Rhenus is not the only logistics solutions provider active in 3PL and 4PL offerings, it has invested in added expertise and software to support this specific service.

As Chris Gerfertz explains, “As a logistics service provider, the most important aspects of 4PL are perhaps not the own assets, but rather the logistics expertise that flows into configuring the software and the organising the supply chain according to the customer-specific needs, using our own software provider. This, in addition to the logistics know-how that we as Rhenus have built up over the years, is where we can offer customers a real added value.” In a cooperation pilot project with sister company REMONDIS, Rhenus has provided a 4PL solution covering different logistics services for REMONDIS and their customer from the fashion and textile industry, organising the recycling of used textiles with more than 2,500 transports per year.

The project also includes the use of a new transport management system, which increases the visibility of the supply chain streams and maintain transparency along the complete process as well as providing potential escalation scenarios and solutions. This provides REMONDIS with up-to-date views of the current situation and means of solving potential disruption. “In view of the fact that a lot of our customers are relying on the organisation of a large number of transports for returns or recycling of products, due to the EU-wide regulations for sustainability of production in a wide range of industries, we commissioned Rhenus as our sister company to provide us with 4PL services. This is necessary to position ourselves for the future and provide our customers the best possibilities of working together, to provide them with the highest value and ensure communication, documentation and transparency standards”, adds Simon Bodmer, describing the cooperation.

Together, the REMONDIS and Rhenus experts are also looking to the future of this service offering, specifically 5PL and beyond. To learn more, listen to the newest Rhenus podcast episode right here.
