Podcast episode 29: Sustainability on a solid foundation – a new approach to logistics real estate

From simple sheet metal sheds to energy-positive logistics facilities: the logistics industry has made enormous progress in recent decades in terms of the features and energy efficiency of real estate. In the podcast Logistics People Talk, Christian Gremme, architect and Head of Group Real Estate at the Rhenus Group, shares interesting insights into the planning as well as the changing requirements for logistics real estate. His conclusion: sustainability is not only an ecological necessity, but also a social and economic success factor.

Social and technological developments require innovative concepts for more sustainable logistics real estate. Christian Gremme believes that sustainable construction is not a limitation, but an opportunity: Long-term solutions can help preserve resources and be economical, while also offering maximum efficiency.

Flagship projects such as those in Wesel, Tilburg and Nuneaton show that logistics real estate can be more than just big boxes on a spacious lot. Gremme is working on not only integrating buildings into their surroundings in a more aesthetically appealing way, but also on making the logistics processes at the facility level more sustainable.

From photovoltaics and geothermal energy to green roofs and outdoor areas: there are many ways to maximize energy efficiency. However, Gremme believes that the reusability of building materials and the optimization of existing properties are just as important.

One crucial factor here is that the equipment and technologies always have to be adapted to local conditions. Using the example of the logistics site in Wesel, which has been in operation since 2023, Gremme describes how careful planning and state-of-the-art technologies can help to achieve an energy-plus balance – the building generates more energy than it consumes.

To find out why investing in sustainable logistics real estate makes sense not only ecologically but also economically, and what Gremme’s plan for Rhenus is to maintain the highest standards in the future, listen to the latest episode of Logistics People Talk. Discover more now!
