Rhenus offers project logistics transports for a variety of branches and sectors, including the energy, renewables, petrochemical, industrial and machinery, factory installation and relocation, hospitality and construction industries. Below, we present case studies for these specialised solutions.
In most of Europe, project transport via road can be conducted at night, when the streets are empty and the slow procession of the truck, which often can only move at walking pace, does not cause any traffic jams.
It is routine to check new devices and machines for their safety. However, the transport of a 176 t transformator is a logistical challenge.
Those are the statistics of the transport of a new 150 t transformer to a power plant in northern Thailand. The project included the jacking and skidding processes for the removal of the old transformer and the successful installation of the new module.
The transport of the new 150 t transformer started at the seaport of Laem Chabang.
The thorough preparation by our transport engineers and the local operation team in Thailand resulted in an excellent performance during the jacking and skidding processes for the removal of the old transformer and the successful installation of the new module.
Rhenus also conducted the removal of the old transformer from its foundation and finished the job five days before schedule.
Implementing the change in energy policy, also called energy transition, is creating huge challenges for the logistics sector. Extremely heavy components and foundations have to be moved safely from their production site to their point of use and assembled there. We offer efficient solutions for storage, handling and transporting these units and their components for manufacturers, suppliers and operators.
For example, we transport onshore wind power towers from the heart of the country to the nearest port, transship them on board sea-going vessels and then transport them to their place of deployment. Our employees keep an overview of your transport chain at all times and not only handle the planning work, but the documentation and customs clearance as well.
Managing the logistics of an international project often requires the operation in countries that one may not be familiar with. To provide you with the needed local expertise, we have established a network of local experts. We are your competent partner for shipping your OOG cargo across the world.
Our experts know exactly how to avoid unnecessary costs. That`s why they were able to transport two silos from Canada to the south of the USA without any utility lifts or special police escort.
The transport was conducted by truck. The cylindrical silos were loaded onto the open trailer and secured for the road transport.
Our reputation is built upon our expertise in finding solutions for challenging transport operations. In this example, the biggest challenge we faced was the weather conditions during typhoon season.
Out of gauge means "outside the norm", which perfectly describes our field or project logistics. These goods require special planning, not just for the transport, but the route, the secure fastening of the load on vessel or truck, the vibrations during the transport and any other exterior means.
The demand for both renewable and fossil energy sources is growing. Some of the regions rich in oil and gas supplies are located in North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, South America and on the Caspian Sea. Technical expertise is necessary to search for and pump the raw materials – in this case, crude oil and natural gas. We support you with our logistics expertise so that you can develop your exploration sites and have the supplies on hand. We also transport components for refineries and complete oil platforms. One major focus of this work is in North Africa. We have our own offices in the Libyan capital of Tripoli and in the Tunisian coastal town of Gabès.
We can handle your transport operations within the Maghreb countries by working with our partners. If needed, we can make use of our European network at any time, too. As a result, we manage to combine local knowledge, extensive capacity and Western European quality standards. Our employees have many years of experience in the oil and gas sector.
Our partners also have a top-quality fleet of vehicles, which not only includes trucks, but also multi-axle desert vehicles capable of transporting up to 100 tonnes, heavy-duty equipment, mobile cranes able to handle payloads of 500 tonnes, storage space and warehouses. This equipment enables us to reach even remote extraction sites without any trouble and these vehicles can also make their way to desert regions where the transport infrastructure is still underdeveloped.
But that is not the whole story: we do not just offer pure transport services from A to B, but also logistics services for oilfields. This work includes providing service containers and overnight containers for the employees working on the platforms. If required, we can also manage the supplies of spare parts. This means that we guarantee rapid deliveries of parts to the oilfield and the drilling platform and minimise costs for downtimes.
Using trucks for pre-carriage, our own Rhenus coasters, port handling of ocean freight (breakbulk) on a container vessel and a charter vessel, loading and discharging surveys as well as method statements made by our inhouse engineering experts.
The road transport of the tanks was conducted at night, when streets were empty and the experts could take their time to maneuver the cargo around tight spots.
The transshipment of the oversized tanks had to conducted done with special care so as not to damage the material. In order to protect the tanks, a plastic covering foil was applied to the outside.
The transshipment of the oversized tanks was also a challenge because the tanks had few lift points to which chains or ropes could be attached. Rhenus successfully transshipped the tanks between the various modes of transport.
The shipment included multiple oversized tanks and an energy storange system, which were all transshipped from the European mainland to Ireland.
The oversized tanks reached their final destination via road transport, which was carefully planned. The path was prepared, traffic lights and other hindering objects were temporarily removed and the transport was successfully concluded.
Even huge parts like this bodywork for a double-decker bus can be transported, transshipped and delivered to any location.
The bladed rotor, which needed immediate air transportation to be quickly repaired, would not initially fit in an AN-124 fuselage. Our USA team helped redesign the frame to allow a 4 cm clearance, requiring a special loading ramp and tandem lifts.
The cargo included waste heat boilers and their accessories. With parts of up to 28.80 m and 56 t, the shipment had a total volume of 4,050 frt.
The Rhenus network that covers almost every part of the world and our expertise in project logistics are two of our core strengths.
In order to find the best route for your project cargo, we often combine multiple modes of transport. Coastal vessels (coasters), barges and trucks are the most common.
The transshipments of the oversized 79 t drums onto the ocean-going vessel was done via heavy lift crane.
Skilled experts surveyed the discharging activities at the port and accompanied all transports to the site to ensure a proper hand over.
Rhenus conducted the transport of six rectifiers with a total volume 15,000 frt. The sea freight was conducted with a heavy lift conventional vessel. To cover the last mile, self-propelled modular trailers transported the parts from the jetty to the construction site.
Cross-border cooperation is often necessary in a globalised world economy when companies manufacture clothing, vehicles, entertainment electronics and many other goods. This also applies to plants and machines designed and built to produce industrial and consumer goods. These days, it is the exception rather than the rule for the needed components to come from a single manufacturer or just one country.
Our project specialists ensure that the complete plant or special individual components in machines are transported to their place of use punctually and without any damage. We plan the project logistics chain so that large cargo units, which come from more than one country, arrive at the place where they are needed exactly on time. Some of the plants and machines that we have transported in the past include heavy generators weighing 380 tonnes, cranes as well as parts of a pressing plant, which weigh up to 300 tonnes.
Transporting out-of-gauge cargo
When you want to transport over 815 m³ of partially oversized cargo from Shanghai to Indonesia, you have to deal with a lot of different companies: Unless, of course, you work with our project logistics experts.
We specialise in road transportation for out-of-gauge or heavy duty transports. Our team always finds the right way and gets the shipment to its final destination safe and sound.
Our ocean freight service in Indonesia connected the ports of Antwerp (BE) and Jakarta (ID) to build a major gas plant in the country.
Our planning and engineering teams always map out and test the best possible route for the transport, including calculations for the vibrations during transport and secure lashing for the freight.
With a dedicated team of site-operation specialists, engineers and the motivated people in the project logistics department, our colleagues in Thailand handle all kinds of project cargo, no matter if used or brand-new.
Increasing dynamics of global markets and the strategic changeability of production are continuing to gain importance. The installation of new factories or the relocation of existing sites is a mammoth task for any company. Decisions must be carefully considered because they have long-term consequences and later changes are only possible with much time and resources. Rhenus supports your company in handling all logistic tasks so that you can remain focused on production.
The dismantling and relocation of used industrial equipment requires management of the following challenges:
The installation of industrial equipment at its new location includes:
